upi fees 2026: the ₹2,000 line that changes how india pays from 15 october 2026, eligible person-to-merchant upi payments above ₹2,000 carry a 0.4% merchant fee, capped at ₹300. everyday scans and person-to-person transfers stay free. the threshold is the real story. news editorial team – technology pro upi-fees-2026 upi fees 2026: the ₹2,000 line that changes how india pays upi was built to feel free. that is why the new fee debate is noisy. the real story is not “upi now has charges.” from 15 october 2026, eligible person-to-merchant payments above ₹2,000 sit in a different cost zone. person-to-person transfers do not. most everyday scans do not either. what changed npci’s mdr framework, announced on 15 september 2026 after a payments-law amendment the day before, takes effect on 15 october. in plain terms: - person-to-person upi stays free , at any amount, including transfers to yourself - person-to-merchant payments up to ₹2,000 stay free - eligible merchant payments above ₹2,000 carry a 0.4% mdr , paid by the merchant, not the user - that fee is capped at ₹300 once the payment hits ₹75,000 - small merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh a month via upi qr (the p2pm category) stay on zero mdr, even on a single large payment - apps cannot add a platform fee on upi, and the charge cannot be passed on as a customer surcharge a merchant on a ₹3,000 payment pays ₹12. on ₹50,000, ₹200. on ₹1 lakh, the 0.4% maths says ₹400, but the cap holds it at ₹300. essential categories are cheaper still. railways, telecom, insurance, fuel, utilities and agriculture inputs pay a flat ₹5 above ₹2,000. capital-market payments (mutual funds, brokers) pay 0.02%, also capped at ₹300. npci and the finance ministry say about 96% of person-to-merchant transactions stay under the line, so they are untouched. the value mix is different: a large share of merchant payment value sits above ₹2,000. that distinction is the whole policy. why the ₹2,000 line matters upi changed india because it removed the friction of thinking about cards, wallets and cash limits. that convenience built trust. now the trust has a new variable, but only on one side of the checkout. the ₹2,000 threshold does three things: 1. it separates small payments from large ones - chai, groceries, auto fare and daily bills stay in the free lane - larger spends move into a priced band for the merchant 2. it turns a payment method into a decision point - users may still split a big bill, even though they are not the ones billed - merchants with high average tickets have a real cost to model 3. it changes the economics of online checkout - electronics, travel, courses, d2c bundles, saas upgrades and ticketing sit on the expensive side of the line - fuel, rail, insurance and utilities mostly do not, because of the ₹5 flat rate that is the shift. it is not a tax on users. it is incentive design inside the payment rail, after six years of zero mdr. what users should understand the question is not “am i paying now?” officially, no. the mdr is a merchant cost. npci has said it cannot be added at checkout as a upi surcharge, and upi apps cannot levy a platform fee. the catch is still behaviour a banned surcharge is not the same as a frozen price. some merchants may: - nudge bigger tickets below ₹2,000 - trim offers on large orders - change which payment choice they push - quietly adjust bundle pricing so even if the scan screen stays clean, the fee can show up in how offers are built. that is a commercial response, not a line item npci allows. what merchants should understand for merchants, the change is direct. this is a pricing and conversion decision, not a user fee. who actually pays 0.4% if a business is outside the small-merchant exemption and often takes tickets above ₹2,000, the economics matter. think: - electronics - travel bookings - online courses - d2c bundles - saas upgrades - ticketing platforms those merchants may start treating payment choice like a funnel step. who does not street vendors and neighbourhood shops inside the p2pm cap (up to ₹1 lakh a month via upi qr) remain on zero mdr. fuel pumps, insurers, telcos and railway ticketing pay ₹5, not 0.4%. a ₹5,000 fuel payment is not a ₹20 problem. that is why the fee feels controversial even though most small vendors sit outside the main pain zone. is upi still cheaper than cards? it depends on the ticket and the category. for payments up to ₹2,000, upi is still free to the merchant. card mdr is not. above the line, 0.4% capped at ₹300 is still low next to typical credit-card mdr, and it is flat ₹5 in the essential categories. cash has its own handling cost. upi still wins when the scan is the path of least resistance. the point is not that one rail is always cheapest. the point is that payment choice is visible again on large merchant tickets, in a market where upi had become the default. why this matters for the indian tech economy upi scaled because money moved quickly and, for six years, at zero mdr. banks and apps carried that cost, with the government bridging part of it. the new framework is the industry’s long-standing ask for a funding line on larger merchant payments. the fee is shared across the acquiring bank, the issuing bank, the payment app and other service providers. five percent of mdr collections goes into a fund for small-merchant adoption. payments are no longer a neutral layer. they sit inside: - product design - checkout flow - conversion rate - pricing strategy - user trust that is why the debate feels bigger than 0.4%. the practical takeaway for users: - you are not charged for sending money, or for a merchant scan of ₹2,000 or less - a fee on screen labelled as a upi charge is not how this framework is written - still watch offers and bundle pricing on large orders for merchants: - check whether you fall under the ₹1 lakh-a-month p2pm exemption - if not, model 0.4% above ₹2,000, with a ₹300 ceiling from ₹75,000 - if you are in fuel, rail, telecom, insurance or utilities, model ₹5, not 0.4% - watch checkout behaviour above the line before you assume customers will switch rails bottom line upi is still a powerful rail. it is no longer a free line on every merchant payment. the ₹2,000 threshold, the 0.4% rate, the ₹300 cap and the small-merchant exemption are the actual policy. together they turn large-ticket checkout from a convenience feature into a business decision. that is why this story is bigger than the fee itself. 👉 for more such insights, follow us on insta (https://www.instagram.com/technologypro.in) and join our newsletter (https://technologypro.substack.com/)! sources - npci sets 0.4% fee on upi merchant payments above ₹2,000, effective 15 october (https://www.business-standard.com/finance/news/npci-sets-0-4-fee-on-upi-merchant-payments-above-2-000-effective-oct-15-126091501061 1.html) — business standard - india’s upi ends free era with fee on large merchant payments (https://www.reuters.com/world/india/india-payments-authority-sets-04-fee-upi-merchant-payments-above-2000-rupees-2026-09-15/) — reuters - upi payments over ₹2,000 to merchants will attract 0.4% fee (https://indianexpress.com/article/business/upi-payments-over-rs-2000-to-merchants-will-attract-0-4-fee-10879274/) — the indian express - npci introduces 0.4% mdr on upi payments above ₹2,000 (https://www.thehindu.com/business/npci-introduces-04-percent-mdr-charge-on-upi-payments-above-rs-2000-exempts-small-merchants-person-to-person-transfers/article71468913.ece) — the hindu - upi remains free for consumers; payments over ₹2,000 to merchants attract 0.4% fee (https://www.indiatoday.in/business/story/upi-remains-free-for-consumers-payments-over-rs-2000-to-merchants-will-attract-04-fee-2995255-2026-09-15) — india today

trump's tariffs are here: how should india rethink its it sector? with trump's 50% tariffs shaking up global trade, india's it sector faces indirect hits from client budget cuts and potential service taxes. here's how india can strategize to keep its $283b tech engine roaring. news editorial team – technology pro trump-tariffs-indian-it-strategy hey tech folks, trump's back with his tariff hammer, slapping 50% duties on indian goods, and india's $283 billion it sector is feeling the heat. while software exports aren't directly taxed (yet), the ripple effects—tighter us client budgets, visa curbs, and whispers of outsourcing taxes—are forcing a rethink. it's a tense moment, but also a chance to make our it game plan smarter and more global. with the us driving 60-70% of our it revenue, we can't ignore the geopolitical waves. here's how india can pivot to keep its tech crown shining. diversify beyond the us market the us is our it bread and butter, but relying on it for 60%+ of revenue is risky when tariffs spark inflation and client cutbacks. indian it firms like tcs and infosys should chase markets like europe, japan, and the middle east, where demand for ai and cloud services is surging. this is exciting because it pushes companies to globalize their client base. for india, it means investing in local partnerships abroad—think joint ventures in singapore or germany—to dodge us-centric trade drama. double down on ai and automation talk of tariffs on remote workers and outsourcing (like the proposed 25% hire act tax) could jack up costs for us clients. india's edge? our massive talent pool can pivot to ai-driven solutions that cut costs and stay competitive, like automating mundane it tasks or building smarter saas platforms. developers, this is your moment to shine with skills in machine learning or robotic process automation. it's a practical way to make our services tariff-proof and keep clients hooked. strengthen local hiring and onshore presence h1b visa crackdowns are looming, with trump's team eyeing tighter rules to prioritize us workers. indian firms can counter this by boosting local hiring in the us or setting up more delivery centers in places like canada or ireland, where visa rules are friendlier. this move isn't cheap, but it’s strategic—it builds trust with us clients and sidesteps visa woes. plus, it’s a chance to train indian talent for global roles, keeping our edge sharp. advocate for smarter trade policies trump's tariffs, tied to india’s russian oil imports, are a geopolitical jab that could shave 0.5-0.8% off our gdp if trade tensions escalate. india needs to play hardball in trade talks, pushing for it exemptions or reciprocal deals to protect our $48b export market. this is crucial because it isn't just code—it's india's global brand. nasscom and the government should team up to lobby for digital trade agreements, ensuring our tech stays a global leader. takeaway: turn crisis into opportunity trump’s tariffs are a wake-up call, but india’s it sector has bounced back from worse. the practical step? companies should fast-track diversification, invest in ai, and build onshore hubs, while professionals upskill in high-demand fields like cybersecurity. reflect: this is our chance to evolve from the world’s back office to its innovation hub. let’s seize it! 👉 for more such insights, follow us on insta (https://www.instagram.com/technologypro.in) and join our newsletter (https://technologypro.substack.com/)! sources: 1. trump tariffs: is us trying to punish india's prized it sector next? how to remember multiple passwords with power comes responsibility, and with every site you visit comes a new login id and a password. here are the tricks by which you can remember all your passwords. how-to remember-multiple-passwords with power comes responsibility, and with every site you visit comes a new login id and a password. here are the tricks by which you can remember all your passwords. ways to remember passwords a strong password includes 8 or more alphanumeric characters with special symbols, and a combination of upper and lower case letters. also, it is recommended that you use a unique password for each site. hope you are following these conventions. and are now looking for ways to remember those strong unique passwords. 1. write them down in a cryptic manner nothing beats our instinct to write down something important. this goes with passwords too, especially, when you have a lots of them. so while writing down passwords make sure that you don't write them as it is. either convert them using some cryptography alogorithm or use your own cryptic symbols. 2. adjust a single strong password for each site if you don't want to write them down, which is understandable, the next step is to keep them in mind. but that's tough. even though you might remember the passwords, there's a high chance that you can forget which password was actually used for what site. for this purpose what you can do is have a strong single base password and tweak it a little bit as per the site you are using. for example: single strong base password: mystr0ngpwd007 modifying it for google: mystr0ngpwd007gle modifying it for facebook: mystr0ngpwd007ook (using the last three words from the platform) 3. use password management applications though the above ones are not a bad option, this is a recommended one. because, eventually, there will come a time when you'll have a lot of passwords to handle for home, office, and personal stuff. so it is better to delegate this work to the professionals. using a password management application is a good option because it allows you to create totally random passwords for each site, however long and hard you want them to be. the only concern is to take care of the master password. you gotta keep it safe and secure. make sure your service provider is an authentic one. some famous password management solutions are lastpass, 1password, bitwarden, etc. (not sponsored :p) conclusion mostly, it's recommended to use a password management solution. but choose whichever shoe fits you. thanks for reading, share with your friends to help them keep their passwords safe as well. cheers!

nepal's gen z uprising: social media ban ignites revolution and calls for a modi-like leader dive into the chaos in nepal where young protesters, fueled by frustration over corruption and a sudden social media blackout, toppled the government and voiced admiration for india's pm modi. a look at how digital tools sparked real-world change, from an indian perspective. news editorial team – technology pro nepal-genz-uprising imagine waking up to find your favorite apps like instagram, facebook, and whatsapp suddenly blocked by the government. that's exactly what happened in nepal last week, sparking a firestorm among the youth that led to violent protests and the resignation of prime minister k.p. sharma oli. as indians, we've seen our share of digital movements, but this nepali "gen z revolution" hits close to home, blending tech frustration with calls for strong leadership like our own pm modi. this isn't just another protest story—it's a reminder of how social media has become the lifeline for young voices worldwide. the ban, meant to curb "misinformation," backfired spectacularly, turning online anger into street battles. from kathmandu's burning buildings to viral videos praising modi's style, here's what unfolded. the spark: a sudden social media blackout it all started when the nepali government slapped a ban on 26 major platforms, including whatsapp and instagram, citing corruption scandals and the need to control narratives. gen z, already fed up with joblessness and "nepo kids" flaunting luxury, saw this as the last straw. protests erupted almost immediately, with thousands hitting the streets in kathmandu and other cities. this is exciting because it shows how reliant we've all become on these tools for organizing and amplifying voices. in india, think back to the farmers' protests or caa movements—social media was key. developers and activists might find this useful as a case study on why banning apps often amplifies the very issues governments want to hide. violence escalates: clashes, deaths, and a toppled pm what began as peaceful demands quickly turned violent. at least 19 to 30 people lost their lives in clashes with security forces, and protesters even torched parliament and the supreme court buildings. the army stepped in with curfews, but the damage was done—pm oli resigned on september 9 amid the chaos. from an indian lens, it's a stark contrast to our stable digital ecosystem under modi, where initiatives like digital india empower youth rather than silence them. this fiasco highlights the risks of heavy-handed tech policies; it's like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. demands for change: hindu rashtra and a 'modi-like' leader amid the unrest, protesters pushed for big reforms, including a new constitution declaring nepal a hindu rashtra and rooting out corruption. but what caught many indians' attention were viral clips of nepali youth saying, "we want a prime minister like modi," praising his strong governance and anti-corruption stance. this is pretty flattering for us next door, isn't it? it underscores how modi's model—focusing on development, digital inclusion, and firm leadership—resonates beyond borders. for tech-savvy indians, it's a nod to how our apps and platforms help build national pride. the aftermath: interim government and lingering tensions with oli out, former chief justice sushila karki, an alumna of banaras hindu university, was picked to lead an interim setup. social media is back online, but the streets are still patrolled by the army, and debates rage over the next steps. it's a messy transition, but one that could inspire similar youth-led pushes elsewhere. developers might want to note how quickly bans can boomerang—perhaps building more resilient, decentralized apps could be the future. takeaway this nepal episode is a wake-up call: in a connected world, silencing digital voices only makes them louder. if you're a young indian techie, reflect on how you can use platforms responsibly to drive positive change, maybe even volunteer for digital literacy programs. and hey, let's appreciate our relatively open online space—it's not something to take for granted. 👉 for more such insights, follow us on insta (https://www.instagram.com/technologypro.in) and join our newsletter (https://technologypro.substack.com/)! sources - the guardian: nepal's gen z protesters (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/sep/10/nepal-gen-z-protests-corruption) - cnn: nepal protests explainer (https://www.cnn.com/2025/09/09/asia/nepal-protests-social-media-ban-explainer-intl-hnk) - al jazeera: nepal gen z protests (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/9/8/six-killed-in-nepal-amid-gen-z-protests-after-social-media-ban-all-to-know) - ndtv: nepal youth demand modi-like pm (https://www.ndtv.com/video/nepal-protest-breaking-not-oli-we-want-a-prime-minister-like-modi-says-nepal-s-youth-to-ndtv-992158) - swarajya: nepal gen z hails modi (https://swarajyamag.com/world/nepals-gen-z-hails-pm-modis-leadership-model-as-political-turmoil-deepens-amid-deadly-protests-in-neighbouring-country)

google pauses its open-source bug bounty after ai floods the pipeline google froze oss vrp product-vulnerability submissions on 1 october 2026 after a surge of invalid ai reports. the pause is a triage problem, not a security one — and indian oss teams should change intake now. stories editorial team – technology pro google-pauses-oss-bug-bounty-after-ai-flood google pauses its open-source bug bounty after ai floods the pipeline google paused part of its open-source bug bounty on 1 october. not because researchers stopped finding bugs. because too many reports stopped being real. techcrunch reported that google froze the open source software vulnerability rewards program after a “significant rise” in ai submissions. google’s own line is sharper: “a significant rise in automated submissions, the vast majority of which are not valid.” an update is due in q1 2027. what actually paused this is not a shutdown of google’s whole bounty machine. oss vrp stopped taking new product-vulnerability reports. supply-chain reports still go through. reports filed before 1 october stay in the queue. some google cloud repos can still land in cloud vrp. other google bounty programmes, and the patch rewards program, remain open. the pause is intake design, not a claim that open source got safer overnight. why ai reports break triage ordinary spam is easy to dump. ai reports look finished. they come with titles, steps, logs, and impact language. maintainers still have to prove the bug exists. that is the cost: each fake report burns the same first hour as a real one. securityweek and tom’s hardware both say google engineers and open-source maintainers were overwhelmed by invalid reports and hallucinations. that is the new failure mode. volume went up. signal did not. why this hits india india has a large bounty-hunting and oss maintainer base. a lot of that work happens on nights, side projects, or as the only security contact on a repo. those teams cannot absorb google-scale noise. if intake stays “send us everything,” generated reports fill the queue and the real bugs wait. for indian startups shipping on google oss, android libraries, or cloud repos, treat security mail like a product funnel, not an inbox. what oss teams should do next three filters beat a closed programme. 1. demand a reproduction. version, command, input, observed output. if it cannot be run, it waits. 2. ask for impact, not adjectives. who is affected, remote or local, auth required, what data moves. 3. split the queue. reproducible reports go first. vague or clearly generated reports go to a slow lane. do not ban ai. ban unverifiable claims. bottom line google did not pause oss vrp because bug bounties failed. it paused because ai made low-effort reports cheap, and human attention is not. the teams that survive this will reward evidence, not volume. 👉 for more such insights, follow us on insta (https://www.instagram.com/technologypro.in) and join our newsletter (https://technologypro.substack.com/)! sources - google froze its open source bug bounty program due to a ‘significant rise’ in ai submissions (https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/04/google-froze-its-open-source-bug-bounty-program-due-to-a-significant-rise-in-ai-submissions/) — techcrunch - google narrows open source bug bounty amid wave of invalid automated reports (https://www.securityweek.com/google-narrows-open-source-bug-bounty-amid-wave-of-invalid-automated-reports/) — securityweek - google oss vrp rules (https://bughunters.google.com/about/rules/open-source/google-open-source-software-vulnerability-reward-program-rules) - google vrp on x (https://x.com/googlevrp/status/2105689195180179605) - google suspends part of the oss vrp due to invalid ai submissions (https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/google-suspends-part-of-the-oss-vrp-bug-bounty-program-due-to-an-influx-of-invalid-ai-submissions-product-vulnerability-submissions-ended-october-1) — tom’s hardware

5 Essential Government Apps Every Indian Should Have in 2025

dhh put the pencil down. so what should programmers do now? dhh says agents now write most of the code at 37signals. the interesting question is not whether programmers disappear. it is what becomes valuable when writing code is no longer the bottleneck. stories editorial team dhh-pencils-down dhh put the pencil down. so what should programmers do now? david heinemeier hansson did not say that programming is dead. his argument is more specific: writing the code yourself is becoming unnecessary. at the rails world opening keynote in austin, dhh said 37signals has essentially gone "pencils down". agents now write most of the code, while humans decide what needs to be built, guide the implementation, review the result and ship it. on 6 october, he doubled down on the idea in his post over my dead pencil . the claim is provocative, but the underlying shift is already happening across software development. the question for engineers is no longer whether ai will write code. it is what happens to the engineering role when writing code stops being the main bottleneck. from writing code to specifying software dhh dates his own transition to november 2025. he says he spent 21 years writing roughly 30,000 lines of production ruby a year. in august, he produced around 150,000 lines of code, with almost none of it typed by him. he says he stopped writing code by hand around march. dhh believes the productivity gap could eventually become much larger than the traditional "10x engineer" idea. he described 100x as unsurprising and suggested that 1,000x may be closer to the eventual difference between a developer working without agents and one who knows how to use them effectively. whether the number is actually 1,000x is difficult to establish. the more important point is that implementation is becoming dramatically cheaper. software has been moving in this direction for decades. compilers removed the need to think in machine instructions. high-level languages removed another layer of complexity. frameworks and cloud platforms removed more work from the developer. ai coding agents are doing the same thing with manual implementation. that also explains dhh's comment that english has become his preferred programming language. when an agent handles much of the implementation, the valuable input is increasingly the description of the problem, the desired behaviour and the constraints. the bottleneck is moving the obvious question is what engineers should actually be good at when typing code is no longer the main constraint. the answer is not simply "prompting". an engineer still needs to understand the problem, break it into useful pieces, define what good looks like and recognise when the implementation is wrong. they need enough knowledge of the underlying system to review an agent's decisions rather than blindly accepting them. that changes the nature of the work. instead of spending most of the time converting tickets into code, engineers can spend more time thinking about architecture, edge cases, reliability, performance and product behaviour. this is also where the traditional 10x engineer conversation starts to look outdated. the interesting comparison may increasingly be between a good developer working without agents and a good developer who knows how to direct several agents effectively. the gap could be significant. but there is an important limitation: an agent can produce 10,000 lines of code very quickly. it cannot automatically determine whether those 10,000 lines should exist. that still requires engineering judgment. why this matters for indian software engineers this shift is particularly relevant to india's technology industry. a significant part of india's software business has historically been built around engineering capacity: more developers, more projects, more tickets and more billable hours. if one engineer can now produce substantially more with ai agents, that model will eventually face pressure. the same change creates an opportunity for indian product teams. a small team can potentially build software that previously required a much larger engineering organisation. a developer who once depended on separate frontend, backend, qa and infrastructure resources for every feature can increasingly coordinate much of that work through ai tools. this does not mean every engineer needs to become a founder. it means the leverage available to a strong engineer is increasing. for individual engineers, that should influence what skills are worth investing in. becoming slightly better at writing react, java or python code will still matter, but it is unlikely to be the biggest differentiator five years from now. system design, architecture, ai agents, product thinking, evaluation and the ability to ship complete systems are likely to matter more. what happens to programming skills? this does not mean engineers should stop coding. in fact, strong programming fundamentals may become more important because the engineer is now responsible for reviewing substantially more generated code. an agent can confidently produce an inefficient database design, an insecure api or an unnecessarily complicated architecture. without the ability to recognise those problems, higher ai productivity simply produces bad software faster. the workflow is therefore changing rather than disappearing. the traditional process looks something like: ticket → write code → test → ship an increasingly common workflow looks more like: problem → specification → agent implementation → review → test → iterate → ship the engineer moves one level higher in the process. the role starts to resemble a technical director working with extremely fast software agents: deciding what should happen, delegating implementation, reviewing the result and correcting the direction when necessary. that is a very different job from simply writing every line of code. the uncomfortable part there is one part of dhh's argument that engineers should take seriously. if the most enjoyable part of programming is turning a ticket into working code, ai agents are directly changing that part of the job. some of the repetitive implementation work that developers have spent years getting good at is becoming much easier to automate. but if the interesting part is understanding a problem, designing a system, making trade-offs and seeing a product come together, the shift looks very different. the cost of building software is falling. smaller teams can attempt bigger ideas, and individual engineers can potentially have much more impact. that does not make engineering less important. it changes where the value sits. the real takeaway dhh's "pencils down" argument is ultimately not about pencils or even ruby. it is about where engineering leverage is moving. writing code is becoming cheaper. knowing what code should be written is becoming more important. for engineers, the opportunity is to move up the stack: from implementation to specification, from individual tickets to systems, and from simply producing code to judging whether the resulting software is actually good. the engineers who adapt will not necessarily be the ones who write the most code. they will be the ones who can give ai systems the right direction, catch their mistakes and turn that leverage into software that people actually want to use. sources - over my dead pencil (https://world.hey.com/dhh/over-my-dead-pencil-fb0f3647) — dhh, 6 october 2026 - rails world 2026 opening keynote (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdjw drykxy) — ruby on rails - pencils down: dhh declares the end of hand-written code (https://dealroom.co/news/talk-vdjw drykxy-pencils-down-dhh-declares-the-end-of-hand-written-code/) — dealroom - takeaways from dhh's rails world 2026 keynote (https://antonzolotov.com/dhh-rails-world-2026) — anton zolotov
